When the Hotel des Artistes became a modern co-operative of proprietors in 1970, many residents purchased additional appartments. Many were merged together, others were held on to as a form of investment. As a result, a lot of the appartments are let long-term, which is rather unusual for co-operative ownership buildings.
The original marquee, made of steel and glas, was later replaced by a more conventional plastic-marquee. The horse stables and shops across the road have given way to film studios and apartment blocks, but the special ambience of the Hotel des Artistes is the same.
It has been longer than a quarter of a century (1993) since the erector Walter Russell died, but should his spirit be haunting this elegant and expressive building, he would most probably be pleased to see that his masterpiece is still serving the same purpose he had intended originally.
